Mixing patterns between age groups in social networks

چکیده
We present a method for estimating transmission matrices that describe the mixing and the probability of infection between age groups. Transmission matrices can be used to estimate age-dependent forces of infection in age-structured, compartmental models for the study of infectious diseases. We have analyzed the social network generated by bipartite graphs for the synthetic city of Portland and identified mixing patterns. Our results show that children interact most frequently with other children close to their own age, while adults interact with a wider range of age groups and the durations of typical adult contacts are shorter than typical contacts between children. Effects of behavioral changes and mixing patterns in mathematical models for smallpox epidemics
First, we study the effects of behavioral changes in a smallpox attack model. Response strategies to a smallpox bioterrorist attack have focused on interventions such as isolation, contact tracing, quarantine, ring vaccination, and mass vaccina tion. We formulate and analyze a mathematical model in which some individuals lower their daily contact activity rates once an epidemic has been identi...
متن کاملMultiscale mixing patterns in networks
Assortative mixing in networks is the tendency for nodes with the same attributes, or metadata, to link to each other. It is a property often found in social networks, manifesting as a higher tendency of links occurring between people of the same age, race, or political belief. Quantifying the level of assortativity or disassortativity (the preference of linking to nodes with different attribut...
متن کاملSocial network analysis - centrality parameters and individual network positions of agonistic behavior in pigs over three different age levels
Knowledge of the network structure of agonistic interactions helps to understand the formation and the development of aggressive behavior. Therefore, video observation data of 149 pigs over three different age levels were investigated for 2 days each directly after mixing (65 groups in the rearing area, 24 groups in the growing stable and 12 groups in the breeding stable). The aim of the study ...
متن کاملA Household-Based Study of Contact Networks Relevant for the Spread of Infectious Diseases in the Highlands of Peru
BACKGROUND Few studies have quantified social mixing in remote rural areas of developing countries, where the burden of infectious diseases is usually the highest. Understanding social mixing patterns in those settings is crucial to inform the implementation of strategies for disease prevention and control. We characterized contact and social mixing patterns in rural communities of the Peruvian...
متن کاملInferring the Structure of Social Contacts from Demographic Data in the Analysis of Infectious Diseases Spread
Social contact patterns among individuals encode the transmission route of infectious diseases and are a key ingredient in the realistic characterization and modeling of epidemics. Unfortunately, the gathering of high quality experimental data on contact patterns in human populations is a very difficult task even at the coarse level of mixing patterns among age groups. Here we propose an altern...
